TEN REASONS TO VOTE NO
AT THE CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM

1

To save the basic principles of the Charter called for by the founding fathers in the forms and limits of the Constitution

2

To maintain the constitutional principle of equality of and freedom to vote.

3

To avoid that about two-thirds of MPs are appointed by the heads of their parties and that Parliament is dependent upon the heads of the party that wins everything by virtue of a single vote.

4

We will go from perfect to confused bicameralism. In fact, not only the Senate will not be abolished, but there can be a con- stant conflict between the two Chambers, with senators who will work part-time just to get immunity, and will also have the power to lay their hands on the Constitution.

5

Because we will have lost a great opportunity to really reduce the cost of politics, though later we will hear that we cut enough.

6

Because the signatures to be collected for popular initiative laws will increase from 50.000 to 150.000 and the quorum for referenda will be reached with 800.000 signatures, rather than with the current 500.000.

7

Because the leader of the victorious party, though the latter may represent only 20-25% of the voters, or even less, will be master of Government, Parliament, and the Quirinal Palace, and could influence the composition of other constitutional and control bodies, as well as the RAI TV.

8

Because the reform of the fundamental law of the Republic was approved by majority votes, without a broad parliamentary consensus and by applying caste-like anti-democratic measures, such as the one of the so-called ‘kangaroo’, which voided all the amendments to the referendum text submitted by the opposition parties.

9

To avoid the approval of laws that would restrict the rights of workers, the right to health, and to pension: all rights protected by the first part of the Constitution, which can only be undermined by distorting the second part.

10

Because, despite the fact that this Parliament was elected by an electoral law that was declared unconstitutional by the Consti- tutional Court, it has rewritten 47 articles of the Constitution by way of an undemocratic majority.
